DOE Facility Wins Safe-in-Sound Award

The Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), a U.S. Department of Energy facility, is the winner of the 2025 Safe-in-Sound Award for excellence in hearing loss prevention. The award is presented by the National Hearing Conservation Association (NHCA).

KCNSC manufactures more than 80 percent of the nonnuclear components of the United States’ nuclear stockpile, according to its website. In its award application, KCNSC indicated that fewer than 200 of the facility’s 7,000 workers are part of its hearing conservation program (HCP) due to the efforts of health, safety, and environmental staff. The HCP enrolls all workers exposed above 80 dBA.

The facility prioritizes procurement of quieter tools and uses a “good catch” program to encourage workers to report health and safety issues. No work-related standard threshold shifts have been identified at KCNSC in the last five years.

More information about KCNSC’s hearing conservation efforts and the Safe-in-Sound Award is available from the NHCA website.
